School Supplies
1 pack of 8.5 X 11 loose leaf paper, pencils, sharpener, scissors, glue stick, crayons, supply box (small enough to fit in desk), dry erase marker & eraser, 1 composition notebook, 1 2-pocket folder, Kleenex, 1 roll of paper towels, 1 box of sandwich size ziplock bags, Scotch tape
Reading We begin the year with the theme Off to Adventure! Students will focus on individual reading strategies (e.g. predict, phonics, clarify, question, evaluate, summarize) with each story.
Writing Third grade students will begin the year with a focus on the traits of voice and sentence fluency. Students will follow the five steps of the writing process to write a personal narrative.
Math Third graders will explore patterns on number grids, review time, measure lengths using customary and metric units, explore fact families, review algorithms for adding and subtracting, develop the concept of area, and explore the link between multiplication and division.
Science Our first unit of study is Water. Students will work in cooperative groups to complete four investigations in which students explore properties of water, changes in water, interactions between water and other earth materials, and how humans use water.
Homework Collection A homework list outlining the assignments for the week is handed out on Monday. The homework list and finished assignments are placed in the homework folder and is collected and returned on a daily basis. Assignments are also posted at pritzkerschool.org
Tests On Fridays, students will take a spelling, vocabulary, reading selection, and math test.
