Ms. Paulette Flanagan
Special Education Resource

Greetings to All and Welcome to the Special Education Resource page!

Here is a little background information on what a Special Education Resource Teacher does.

The Special Education Resource Teacher and related service providers enforce the IEP (Individualized Education Program) by making sure that all of the specified accommodations and modifications are followed. Every teacher who provides instruction for students with disabilities is required to read the IEP and understand his/her responsibility to the student so the successful implementation of the IEP can be met.

The Special Education Resource Teacher collaborates and consults with the General Education Teachers on a regular basis to assist in establishing realistic expectations and goals prior to instruction. This will ensure that every effort has been made to aid in the success of the special education student.

Some collaborative suggestions may include:

*Allowing the special education student to have extra response time during a lesson
*Providing extra examples and extended discussions when new concepts are   introduced
*Modify or shorten the assignment in class and at home
*Behavior modification techniques, if Social/Emotional factors negatively impact on the student’s performance
*Testing with a Special Education Teacher

Besides receiving accommodations in a general education classroom, the special education resource student is afforded individual (one on one) time with the special education provider to address his/her needs.
In certain cases, the special education student may benefit from an augmented assistive technological device to help them with their functional capabilities. With the special education teacher’s recommendation, and a proven need, a student may receive various programs and devices to help him/her function more independently. *Some of the aids may include:
*Software programs that address specific disabilities
*An augmented dictionary or pen
*Tape recorders
*Adapted keyboards

As you can see, services and support are provided on every level in an educational setting to enable students with disabilities to learn along with their non-disabled peers.

With your support, we plan to have a wonderful and very productive school year.

Thank You.
