Miss Tai Basurto

My name is Tai Basurto, and this year, I will be teaching reading for rooms 303, 304, 308, and 309. I was born and raised in Chicago. I received my bachelor’s degree in elementary education and my master’s degree in reading and learning disabilities from DePaul University. I have taught fourth grade and sixth through eighth grades. I love working with middle school students most, because I think the beginning of adolescence is a critical time in a person’s life. I especially love teaching reading, because I love to read. My favorite genres to read are contemporary realistic fiction and memoirs. In addition to teaching at Pritzker, I am busy with many other things. I also teach with a program called High Jump. I have a pug dog named Moco, and my classroom is filled with pictures of him (and his sister; my parents own her). Learning is so valuable to me, and in my free time, I enjoy taking cooking, auto repair, and creative writing classes. This is my fifth year at Pritzker, and it truly is my home. I am so fortunate to work at a school that is so diverse and where the students have such a positive spirit. I had an amazing summer of learning, participating in several institutes for teachers including studying genocide and human rights at the Illinois Holocaust Musuem and Education Center, spending three incredible weeks in Bloomington, Indiana at Indiana University participating in a National Endowment for the Humanities institute on modern social movements in the United States, and discussing the legacy of Abraham Lincoln for several days in Springfield with middle school teachers from all over the state. This year, I hope to continue to provide a curriculum for Pritzker students where social justice issues are explored through literature and to strengthen my curriculum by focusing on nonfiction reading comprehension. There is so much more that I want to share with both the parents and students about what is going on in my class, and I hope you will regularly check this page for information, including dates for our school's parent book club and other literacy initiatives. -Tai Basurto I could not do what I do without the generous support of the Chicago Foundation for Education, an organization for Chicago teachers that has given me numerous grants to purchase materials for my classroom.
